LEARN ALL ABOUT THE LAW AT COFFS HARBOUR COURTHOUSE

A free event at Coffs Harbour Courthouse will help people from multicultural communities learn more about fast, fair and accessible justice.

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said the event would offer valuable information about the legal system and the courts.

“Coffs Harbour is a diverse community and we want to help people from multicultural backgrounds understand their legal rights and responsibilities,” Mr Singh said.

NSW Attorney General Mark Speakman said the event will deliver reliable legal information and services directly to communities that may not be aware of them due to cultural and language barriers.

“When you arrive in a new country it can be overwhelming, which is why we are working closely with multicultural communities across NSW to ensure they have the tools to navigate the justice system,” Mr Speakman said.

Held over two days, the event will include information sessions on:

  • the difference between civil and criminal law;
  • how a court operates;
  • how to commence court proceedings; and
  • scams and how to avoid becoming a victim.

A number of government services will have information stalls at the event including the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), NSW Police, TAFE and Mid North Coast Community Legal Centre.

The event will be held at the Coffs Harbour Courthouse, 2 Beryl St, on 25 and 26 March from 10am-12 noon.
