This week marks Refugee Week and on the Coffs Coast and across NSW, communities are celebrating the extraordinary contributions of refugees to their local area.
Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said Refugee Week is an opportunity to acknowledge the work done to support those seeking to make a better life in Australia.
“Refugee Week is about promoting harmony and togetherness on the Coffs Coast, and right across our great State,” said Mr Singh, Shadow Minister for Tourism, Emergency Services and the North Coast.
“This week is also an opportunity for us to reflect on experiences of people from a refugee background, and celebrate the contributions they make to our society.
“The theme for this year is Finding Freedom and in a free and prosperous country such as ours, it is important that we appreciate the sacrifices and dedication it takes to live a life free from war, fear and violence.”
Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism Mark Coure said the work done in NSW to help refugees heal and thrive was why the State is considered one of the world’s greatest multicultural societies.
“Everyone deserves to life free from violence, fear and threats, it is incumbent upon all of us to ensure we uphold an individual’s basic human rights and provide a safe and welcoming home here in NSW,” Mr Coure said.
“Every day millions of people across the world embark on dangerous journeys in search of a better life and NSW is and always will be a haven for those fleeing persecution and violence abroad.”
