Another road improvement project will roll out in Coffs Harbour under a $312.5 million boost to rebuild damaged roads and transport infrastructure to better withstand future natural disasters in northern NSW.
Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said the first-of-its-kind Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package will allow roads and transport assets to be built back better able to withstand future extreme natural weather events.
“I’m pleased to say that $2,246,684 has been granted to City of Coffs Harbour for its Betterment of O’Keefe Drive project,” Mr Singh said.
“This project includes replacing the existing seal with rigid pavement to flood/storm proof the road and allow for increased heavy vehicle traffic which is anticipated with the construction of the Coffs Harbour Bypass.
“This is all about ensuring local infrastructure will be rebuilt to a higher standard, making it more resilient to future disasters.
“The communities of the Coffs Coast and across northern NSW have endured unprecedented hardships and devastation and getting these betterment projects underway is something we all can’t wait to see.”
City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Cr Paul Amos said: “Helping to proof our roads against future disasters is important on many levels.
“O’Keefe Drive performs a pivotal function for the industrial precincts of Coffs Harbour, as well as major community and school transport services.
“By improving both the resistance and reliability of the road network, we’re able to reduce the disaster recovery time for a large number of local trades and industries. At the same time, better roads will help make this precinct more attractive to new and growing businesses.”
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said these projects are among 57 rolling out across the state.
“The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government is moving our state forward by building back better the infrastructure projects needed to withstand future extreme weather events and emergencies,” Mr Farraway said.
“This program is just one part of the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government’s plan to build our transport infrastructure to withstand future disasters, reduce recovery costs, keep our communities and our supply chain connected.
“A re-elected NSW Liberal and Nationals Government will commit a further $300 million for a Build Back Better program to invest in more resilient state, regional and local road and transport infrastructure across regional NSW.”
The Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package is equally co-funded by the Commonwealth and NSW governments.
