INDIGENOUS PROJECTS WILL MAKE THEIR MARK

A leading Aboriginal organisation on the Coffs Coast has received almost $350,000 in funding through the NSW Government’s Community and Place Grants program, said Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh.

“This program is providing funding across the State to solutions-focused projects that immediately engage and benefit Aboriginal communities,” Mr Singh said.

“I’m extremely proud funding has been allocated locally to Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation for two projects, delivering real benefits across our region.”

Their projects are as follows:

Strengthening and expanding cultural and education access $250,000 – the first part of the project is new infrastructure for the Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School, including water play equipment, bubblers and water stations, an electronic school bell, library shelving and a sports equipment shed. The project also includes the purchase of a 22-seat bus.

Yilaami – cultural tourism driving sustainable economic development $93,513 – the project aims to develop a wide-ranging Aboriginal experience, constructing the 20-cabin Yilaami Eco-Resort connecting the environment and Aboriginal culture. The project includes the purchase of two vehicles and the purchase of IT equipment.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Ben Franklin said the Community and Place funding program is delivering benefits for local Aboriginal communities.

“This is a terrific and unique program that will put important funding in the hands of Aboriginal groups who best know how to bring about improvements and opportunities for their community,” Mr Franklin said.
